About the Exhibition

〈Unknown Known:

〈Unknown Known:

Gyeonggi Province, where city and countryside, development and preservation, settlement and movement, and communities of many cultural backgrounds exist side by side, is where changes in Korean society appear in concentrated form. Its everyday landscapes, where apartments and roads, factories and farmland, new towns and old neighbourhoods meet, are so familiar they rarely seem remarkable. Yet within them lie many layers: different ways of life and different times, and the traces of the changes Korean society has lived through.

Unknown Known: The Ordinary and the Unfamiliar starts from this paradox of familiarity. Its title points not to a world we do not know, but to an artistic gaze that rediscovers our own world: close at hand but not yet properly seen.

Alert to signs of change, the five young artists (Minjun Kim, Jaerang Song, Jongsu Rhie, Soen Lee, Youngdon Jung) featured in this exhibition draw on their own experience to interpret the different realities of Gyeonggi: the city and its periphery, memory and place, migration and identity, community and development. A farm where disappearance and emergence coexist, a night clothed in unfamiliar light, new homes for migrants, and scenes staged or met by chance on familiar roads each reveal, through the artists' distinct modes of expression, another side of the reality we thought we knew. In these slight misalignments, the familiar turns unfamiliar and the unseen finally comes into view.

Unknown Known: The Ordinary and the Unfamiliar invites us to look afresh at the layers of life accumulated in the all-too-familiar reality we live in. The moment we see it as unfamiliar, the world shows itself beyond what we knew, and seeing becomes a way of asking again about our relationship with it.
