100 Swiss Photobooks

경기사진센터 개관과 함께 마련된 GCP 포토북 라운지의 첫 전시 《100 Swiss Photobooks》는 최근 스위스에서 출간된 포토북과 외국에서 출간된 스위스 사진가들의 주요 포토북을 소개하는 전시이다. Fotostiftung Schweiz, Photo Elysée, Fotomuseum Winterthur, ECAL 등 스위스의 네 개 주요 기관이 선별하고 기증한 도서들을 중심으로 구성되었으며, 스위스 사진문화의 흐름과 포토북의 동시대적 의미를 함께 살펴볼 수 있다. 본 전시는 2023년 광주비엔날레 스위스 파빌리온 프로그램의 일환으로 처음 60권이 소개된 이후, 새롭게 출간된 도서를 더해 한층 확장된 형태로 준비되었다.

오랜 전통을 지닌 스위스 사진 문화에서 포토북은 초기 다큐멘터리 사진에서 현대 사진예술에 이르기까지, 사진이 단순한 기록 매체에서 개인의 시선과 해석을 담는 예술적 표현으로 변화해 온 과정을 보여준다. 이러한 전환은 포토북이라는 형식 속에서 특히 분명하게 드러난다.

디지털 네트워크 속에서 수없이 생산되고 사라지는 이미지들 사이에서 포토북은 이미지가 머무르는 물리적 공간이자 느린 시간의 매체가 된다. 한 장의 사진이 아니라 이미지들의 관계와 흐름, 페이지를 넘기는 경험 자체가 작품의 일부가 된다.

이 전시는 사진을 벽에 걸린 이미지가 아니라 손으로 넘기고 경험하는 이미지의 공간으로 바라보게 한다. 동시에 오늘날 이미지가 넘쳐나는 시대에 종이책이라는 물질적 매체가 여전히 지니는 의미와 가능성을, 높은 완성도를 보여주는 스위스 포토북을 통해 다시 질문하며 관람객들이 천천히 머물고 감상할 수 있는 시간을 제안한다.

With the inauguration of the Gyeonggi Center for Photography, the inaugural exhibition of the GCP Photobook Lounge, 100 Swiss Photobooks, presents a selection of recently published photobooks from Switzerland alongside major photobooks by Swiss photographers published abroad. The exhibition is primarily composed of books selected and generously donated by four leading Swiss institutions—Fotostiftung Schweiz, Photo Elysée, Fotomuseum Winterthur, and ECAL—offering insight into the trajectory of Swiss photographic culture and the contemporary significance of the photobook. Originally presented as part of the Swiss Pavilion at the 2023 Gwangju Biennale with an initial selection of 60 titles, the exhibition is now expanded through the addition of newly published works.

Within Switzerland's long-standing photographic tradition, the photobook reveals the transformation of photography—from an early documentary medium into an artistic form that carries personal vision and interpretation. This shift becomes particularly evident in the form of the photobook itself.

Amid the countless images produced and consumed within digital networks, the photobook offers a physical space where images can dwell—a medium of slower time. Here, it is not a single photograph but the relationships between images, their sequence, and the act of turning pages that together constitute the work.

This exhibition invites viewers to experience photography not as images fixed on a wall, but as a spatial and tactile form—one that unfolds through handling and reading. At the same time, in an age saturated with images, it reconsiders the enduring significance and potential of the printed book as a material medium, through the high level of refinement found in Swiss photobooks. Visitors are encouraged to slow down, dwell, and engage with the works over time.
