경기사진센터의 첫 출발을 상징하는 전시 《빛나는 얼굴들: 아이콘에서 우리로》은 인물사진을 단순한 외형이나 이미지가 아니라, 한 인간의 정신과 시간이 응축된 형상으로 바라보는 데서 출발한다. 한국 사진의 역사에서 가장 본질적인 분야로서 오랜 기간 탐구되어 온 인물사진을 주제로 한 특별 기획전으로, 예술과 대중매체의 맥락에서 자신만의 세계를 구축해 온 한국의 대표적인 인물사진가와 동시대의 문화를 상징하는 인물들의 조우로 창작된 사진들을 선별하여 전시함으로써, 인공지능 시대에 기계적인 기록이 아닌 의식적인 개체로서의 인간과 인간의 관계를 통해 창작되는 인물사진의 중요성을 새롭게 조망한다.

본 전시는 온라인, 디지털 이미지에 익숙한 관람객들로 하여금 전시장이라는 '사진의 공간'을 경험하게 하는 전시로서, 물성으로서 인물사진의 일회성과 고유성에 주목하는 전시이다. 전시 구성으로서는 대중적으로 잘 알려진 특별한 인물들의 상징성보다는, 모든 동시대의 아이콘이 된 인물들도 보통 사람에서 시작되었다는 의미를 되새기며, 31개 시·도의 경기도민들과의 협업을 통해 제작되는 젊은 사진가의 작품이 유명 인물들의 사진들과 함께 전시된다. 이를 통해 사진이 인물을 정보가 아닌 동시대를 살아가는 사람 간의 교감의 결과로서 존재로 다시 보게 하는 매체임을 제시한다.

The exhibition Shining Faces: Icons to Us, marking the first step of the Gyeonggi Center for Photography, begins with the idea that portrait photography is not merely an external likeness or image, but a form in which the spirit and time of a human life are condensed. As a special exhibition dedicated to portrait photography—one of the most fundamental genres in the history of Korean photography and a field that has been explored for decades—it presents a selection of photographs created through encounters between leading Korean portrait photographers, who have built their own visual worlds within the contexts of art and mass media, and figures who symbolize contemporary culture. By bringing these works together, the exhibition seeks to reconsider the significance of portrait photography created through human relationships—between conscious individuals—rather than through mechanical recording in the age of artificial intelligence.

This exhibition invites audiences accustomed to online and digital images to experience the gallery as a "space of photography," focusing on the material presence of portrait photography and its sense of singularity and uniqueness. In its curatorial structure, rather than emphasizing the symbolic status of well-known public figures, the exhibition recalls that even those who have become icons of our time began as ordinary people. Works by a young photographer, produced through collaboration with residents of Gyeonggi Province from all 31 cities and counties, are presented alongside portraits of well-known figures. Through this juxtaposition, the exhibition suggests that photography is a medium that allows us to see individuals not merely as information, but as beings shaped through human encounters and relationships within the shared time of the present.
